Good afternoon, I just signed up with a company called Body Logic due to suspected hypogonadism. I had my blood tested and my testosterone level was 424.
I am 39 years old and am just starting testosterone replacement therapy. The doctor started me on a testosterone cream, at 1ml per day at 10mg.
I know I am not the most patient man in the world but that amount really seems low. When I asked him about that low amount he stated "More is not always better."
He advised he would test my blood again in Aug. 2009 and at that point he may adjust the dosage, he wanted to start of small at first. Does this sound correct to you?
Hello,
No, the dosage does not sound correct. Typically only 10% of testosterone is absorbed through your skin in creams, leaving you with a minuscule 1mg per day.
You need about 5-10x this dose. Typically the cream will be compounded at 10 grams, 1% per ml or cc. 1% of 10 grams is 100mg, and 10% absorbtion leaves you with 10mg per day.
You may want to check your prescription to verify your dosage. Otherwise I'd talk to your doctor to make sure he/she is aware of the 10% absorption rate.
If 10mg gets absorbed, it should be plenty. The human male typically produces about 4-7mg per day so really it should be overkill. Most doctors start at 5 grams, 1% = 5mg absorbed per day and gauge from there.
However, some patients absorb much less than 10%, and eventually have to resort to injecting their testosterone intramuscularly. If your blood work doesn't show modest improvement, then I'd suggest going that route.
Good luck!
Brian
