Symptoms of Male Depression

The symptoms of male depression can be hard to identify sometimes as you may not be as expressive of your emotions and handicaps as most women. You're less likely to concede defeat when things go wrong, and less likely to get help when needed.

Most Common Male Depression Symptoms

- Anger.
- Frustration.
- Violent behavior.
- Impotence. (lack of libido or interest in sex).
- Loss of concentration.
- Fatigue.
- Lack of sleep.
- Physical complaints (headaches, digestion, pain).
- Suspicious, guarded, and blaming of others.
- Guilty or ashamed of who you are.
- Social isolation from family and friends.
- Loss of motivation and interest in work and hobbies.
- Risk taking (extramarital affairs and reckless driving).
- Substance abuse (alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, etc..).
- Prescription medication abuse (pain killers, sleeping pills, etc...).
- Thoughts of suicide.

Whereas women tend to have more feelings of; sadness, crying, anxiousness, meekness/shyness, sleeping too much, and using food and friends to self medicate.

You may find it hard to identify your symptoms, as men aren't generally in touch with their feelings as much as women. It may be easier for you to identify more with physical complaints, like tiredness, lack of libido, and/or pain syndromes.

Your reduced libido can be caused by high stress, and a resulting low testosterone/high cortisol ratio. Also, when cortisol gets too high and testosterone too low, your ability to deal with stressful situations tends to take a nose dive. Optimizing your testosterone and/or taking antidepressants can help with this.
