Steroid Use in Professional Sports

It's insanity! Where the insanity begines depends on what side you're on. Steroid use in baseball is particular crazy these days. It's a witch hunt with everybody losing.

Is using Steroids Cheating?

That depends... cheating who? The fans? They want to see bigger and better records being broken? The other athletes? They are just as likely to be on the drugs.

When everyone is on drugs it's a level playing field right? Surely you may think... they're cheating their health? With rampant steroid use in professional sports, athletes aren't exactly dropping like flies either.

Can Scientists and the Miliary Cheat?

Would you think a nobel prize winner for medicine is cheating if they took Ritalin to focus better? Grants for research can get in to the millions these days. Are these scientists cheating to get this fame and money?

It may sound like a stupid argument for some, but isn't really that differant.

Are fighter pilots cheating if they take amphetamines to stay awake and more alert? Is there such a thing as cheating at war? Should the pilots level the playing field and stop taking performance enhancing drugs?

Surely you must think this argument is getting silly. So is the case for banning steroids and other performance enhancing drugs in sport. Athlete steroid use isn't cheating anybody. They're just using a drug to increase their already great god given talents.

If you aren't sick of anecdotes... what of a police officer using steroids to have one up on the bad guys? Is the cop cheating for wanting to be at the top of his game?

Should he be penalized for wanting to be stronger, quicker, and more able to do his job and possibly save his and his partner's life?

So the next time you criticize a Ben Johnson, Roger Clemens, or Jose Canseco... think of these other alternative super stars and think... Who are they cheating exactly?
