Signs Symptoms of Gout
When your pain and inflammation flare up the signs symptoms of gout take center stage. When first experiencing gout most often 75% of the time your big toe is effected. Typically your first attack will happen in the middle of the night. You may experience an initial feeling of coldness flowing over the joint and surrounding area, followed by severe pain. Surprisingly enough, even the weight of your bed sheets may be enough to cause intense pain. Signs and Symptoms (Acute/Short Term)- Initially a feeling of cold water being poured over the joint is felt.- Intense pain typically in big toe, but also feet, ankles, knees, hands, wrists, and spine. - Inflammation and redness; joint become hot, red, swollen, and tender. - Feeling of stretching and tearing. - Pressure and tightness in the joint. - Extremely sensitive to touch. - Difficulties putting on foot wear (shoes).
Signs Symptoms of Chronic Gout (long term)- Damage and deformation of joints.- Whitish/Yellowish crystal deposits under the skin aka Tophi. - Ulcerations and sores on the skin. - Kidney stones are common with people who experience gout.
Gout Tophi (uric acid crystals underneath skin)Tophi is a collection of uric acid crystals (white and/or yellowish in color), deposited under the skin usually in the elbow, earlobe, and Achilles tendon (back of ankle/bottom of calf). In the majority of cases tophi isn’t painful but it can help with your diagnosis of gout from a doctor. The extraction of uric acid crystals from underneath your skin can help with identification when studied under microscope. Easier diagnosis can lead to better and quicker treatment for your gout in the long term. Bouts of gout typically last anywhere from 3-10 days before settling down. Depending on your treatment used, this period may shorten. Recurrent bouts will usually occur more often and for longer periods of time if proper gout treatment is not undertaken.
Being proactive with gout medications and/or natural remedies for gout can also prevent or minimize the time inflicted.
