Roid rage gives steroids a particularily bad name. I'm sure you've heard stories of someone on steroids going balistic, psychotic, or loony toons from a friend or in the media. The truth is... most steroids actually lessen aggressiveness!
However there are other steroids that can increase aggressiveness, especially if you are predisposed to it. If you're an asshole off steroids, they will most likely make you an even bigger one when on.
Some steroids are much worse than others. Anabolics like testosterone, and Dianabol will generally put you in a better mood, making you less aggressive. They are effective antidepressants that may lessen irritability and anxiety.
Some steroids however may increase aggression. The steroids most known for this are Trenbolone, Masteron, and Halotestin. They are all DHT derived steroids and/or have high androgen receptor binding rates. DHT can increase aggressiveness.
If you are predisposed to being an asshole, please do everyone a favor and stay away from these drugs!
How Steroids Increase Aggression
The mechanism through which some steroids may cause aggression is through the DHT (dihydrotestosterone) binding of the androgen receptor. Anger is largely a function of the neurotransmitter dopamine which DHT increases.
Drugs like cocaine and amphetamines, and mental illnesses like mania and psychosis all have increased dopamine in common.
This is also why dopamine antagonist drugs like Thorazine and Haldol are given during these acute emotional illnesses. They help reduce dopamine in individuals with psychotic breaks and overall aggressive behaviour.
