The Male Birth Control Pill

It's about time a male birth control pill was developed.

Men and women alike want to be in charge of their financial and reproductive destiny.

In a time where men seem to be stripped of their rights once a woman is pregnant, getting a little control back can't be a bad thing.

Having more options to control reproduction will make things easier for both parties depending on how you look at it.

Currently there are four options for the male birth control pill. Two hormonal and two non-hormonal.

Testosterone Progestins and Fertility

Your best bet at this point in time. Your hormones are powerful regulators of sexual function. Taking testosterone and progestins from an outside source will signal your brain to stop creating sperm.

They basically trick your machinery in to thinking "Hey I already have enough testosterone here, I can shut down my balls, since they're not needed any more." Since your testicles are needed for both testosterone and sperm production, fertility drops off.

The good news? Your sperm count should drop down to 0% by 3 months. Much better than the 12% failure rate of condoms. It is also reversible, so you won't have to worry about any permanent effects.

The bad news? Although you can take the progestin by pill, the testosterone needs to be taken by a topically based skin gel or injection. Not as user friendly as you'd probably like. It's also in clinical trials at this point, which mean you can't buy it quite yet.

Thankfully, if you're up to it, you can create your own make shift protocol, involving the progestin Deca Durabolin (Nandrolone) and testosterone enanthate, both at 100mg per week. Both by injection.

Your doctor may have some problems prescribing the Deca however, depending on his/her open mindedness to the male birth control pill. You may have to go to less conventional means, aka black market. The testosterone should be easier to get.

A new drug development called SARMs (Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators) is an oral pill which binds to the testosterone receptor but is not a hormone itself per se.

Birth Control Pill Positive Effects

1. Increases libido.
2. Decreases depression.
3. Decreases anemia, obesity, cholesterol, and hair loss.
4. Treats prostate enlargement and prostate cancer.
5. Decreases wasting for cancer, AIDS, renal disease, and severe burns.
6. Treats low testosterone (hypogonadism), osteoporosis, and sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass).

A SARM labeled as C6, is specifically being developed as a male birth control pill in mind. Although it is still in the pipeline, you should expect to see good things in the future from this one.

The Non-Hormonal Birth Control Pill

One promising drug action, involves stopping the contraction of your muscles controlling ejaculation. You can take it a few hours before sex and it won't interfere with sensation.

The good news... your sperm are back to normal the next day and ready to do business. It is also harmless. You just urinate out the ejaculate afterwards.

The weird thing is, the drug causes you to have dry ejaculations/retrograde ejaculations (semen goes in to bladder rather than urethra)... meaning nothing comes out. It does this by antagonizing the alpha-1 adrenergic receptor (geek speak).

Two Classes of Drugs do this as a Side Effect

1. Neuroleptics - Risperidone (Risperdal), and Clozapine (Clozaril), Chlorpromazine (Thorazine), Thioridazine (Mellaril), Triflupromazine (Vespein), and Mesoridazine (Serentil).

2. Blood pressure medications - Tamsulosin (Flomax), Phentolamine, Terazosin (Hytrin), Phenoxybenzamine (Dibenzyline), Doxazosin (Cardura), and Prazosin (Minipress).

Neuroleptics are generally prescribed for schizophrenia. The blood pressure medications are also routinely prescribed for enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH).

The blood pressure medications would be the best logical choice since they are more selective in their actions. The neuroleptics may be unfavorable due to their possibility of reducing libido via their testosterone lowering effect.

It will be unlikely your doctor will prescribe one these drugs as a male birth control pill. Getting them presribed for one of the other indications may be much easier.

A more practical method, is a drug being developed by a company called Spermatech... fitting isn't it? The drug essentially stops the tails of your sperm from moving, making them essentially "handicapped".

It's unfortunately still in the research phase at this point, but hopefully to be on the market soon if all goes well.
