Low Testosterone in Men
Low testosterone in men can cause a number of associated health problems. Testosterone is a vital hormone responsible for normal masculine development during puberty and maintaining masculine features during adulthood. Testosterone affects many systems in the body and low levels of this hormone may produce a variety of symptoms. Fortunately, in most cases, the condition is easily treatable. Symptoms of Low Testosterone in MenThe symptoms of low testosterone manifest both physically and mentally. When your testosterone levels are low, you may experience problems with sexual dysfunction and infertility. You may notice a decrease in muscle mass and less body hair. However the hair on your head and beard may start thinning. Breast development and loss of bone mass are also common symptoms. Low testosterone may even contribute to high cholesterol and an increased risk of heart attack. Low levels of testosterone may also cause fatigue, brain fog, irritability, mood swings, depression, and a loss of interest in sex. Causes of Low TestosteroneThe causes of low testosterone are classified as primary (originating in the testicles) or secondary (originating in the brain). These causes could be inherited, present at birth, or acquired later in life.Primary causes of low levels of testosterone are commonly due to infection or injury to the testicles. For example, a mumps infection that has spread to the testicles may cause long term damage affecting testosterone production. Physical injury and radiation treatments may also damage the testicles. As you age, your testosterone levels steadily decrease so the risk increases for low testosterone symptoms as well. Disorders of the pituitary gland may also cause low testosterone in men since the pituitary gland regulates hormone production. Pituitary tumors or radiation treatments may damage the pituitary gland and affect testosterone. Some medications may affect testosterone levels. This includes prescription drugs, particularly opiates, as well as most street drugs. Obesity is also thought as a contributor to low testosterone levels. Treatments for Low TestosteroneThe treatments for low testosterone in men involve testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). With TRT, supplemental testosterone is taken to elevate levels to normal. You can take testosterone in the form of a topical gel, patch, injection, subcutaneous, or buccal delivery. Each of these delivery methods has its own advantages and disadvantages. Testosterone replacement therapy helps restore a sense of well-being, revives the sex drive, increases muscle strength, and prevents bone loss. Arimidex and HCG to Increase TestosteroneTo increase its effectiveness, testosterone is sometimes given in combination with other medications like HCG and Arimidex (Anastrozole). Arimidex works to inhibit the conversion of testosterone to estrogen. This helps keep your testosterone levels high while keeping estrogen levels low. HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) helps prevent testicle shrinkage that is associated with TRT and provides a boost to testosterone production as well.
Low testosterone levels in men may cause a myriad of unpleasant side effects leaving you feeling wrung out and lacking a zest for life. If you experience these symptoms, consult your doctor to begin treatment and get your quality of life back.
