Catch the Gynecomastia Symptoms
Before it Becomes Permanent

You can usually tell when the onset of gynecomastia symptoms are occurring by the look, feel, and soreness of your nipples and surrounding area.

Gynecomastia Symptoms

- Itchy nipples
- Sore nipples
- Increase in surrounding tissue size (usually last to occur)
- Milky discharge coming from nipples (only from high prolactin)

If your nipples first feel itchy or sore to the touch or while chaffing against your clothes, it is a good time to start immediate treatment to prevent the development of permanent gynecomastia.

Ideally you should first discontinue any offending medications that are causing high estrogen or prolactin levels. However, be sure to talk with your doctor regarding any medication changes as unknown consequences may occur.

Medications Causing Gynecomastia

As discussed in the causes of gynecomastia page; anabolic steroids, antipsychotics/neuroleptics, prostate cancer drugs, and balding/hair loss medications are usually the main offenders for increased estrogen and prolactin.

If your gynecomastia is estrogen based you can take an aromatase inhibitor (AI) like Arimidex (Anastrozole), Aromasin (Exemestane), or Letrozole (Femara) to quickly reduce their levels. If estrogen is lowered shortly after the symptoms occur, the gynecomastia can easily be reversed.

Prolactin based gynecomastia should be taken care of through the use of dopamine agonist medications like Cabergoline (Dostinex, Cabaser), and Mirapex (Pramipexole). A quick response by lowering prolactin can shrink your gynecomastia back to its original state.

High Estrogen Symptoms

To give yourself a better heads up for developing gynecomastia there are a number of high estrogen symptoms you should be aware of in addition to one’s listed above.

- Sore wrists (carpal tunnel syndrome)
- Prostate enlargement (Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH))
- Bloating
- Anxiety and panic attacks (from increased norepinephrine)
- Depression
- Impotence (erectile dysfunction/softer erections)
- Weight gain

High Prolactin Symptoms

Here are some additional high prolactin symptoms to aid in being proactive against gynecomastia.

- Reduced sex drive/libido
- Increased refractory period (time it takes to have sex again)
- Loss of motivation
- Depression
- Impotence
- Low testosterone levels
- Reduced fertility
- Weight gain
- Reduced thyroid function

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms talk to your doctor to discuss the best course of treatment that’s best for you (i.e. medication, surgery, etc…)
