Gout Diet

A low purine diet will reduce the amount of uric acid in the blood so outbreaks are less likely to occur.

If possible, avoid consuming beer and limit alcoholic beverages to one glass, no more than 2 or 3 times a week. During a gout outbreak, all alcoholic beverages should be avoided.

Increase Water to Ease Gout

Gout sufferers swear by consuming at least one half pound of cherries a day for protection against gout. Raw celery, tomatoes, limes, bananas, carrots, cucumbers, blueberries and blackberries have also been used as remedies as they are beneficial to reducing and neutralizing acids.

Limit Protein for Uric Acid Reduction

Natural remedies for gout also encourage limiting the amount of protein in your diet. Choose lean cuts of meat, use less oil when cooking and replace meat with tofu or soy based products as often as possible.

Anchovies, sardines, mackerels, scallops, gravy, liver, kidneys, sweetbreads and yeast are all high in purines. Avoiding these foods may help manage symptoms.

Though not high in purines, foods such as mushrooms, spinach, oatmeal, cereal, wheat germ, lentils and beans have moderate amounts of purines and should be monitored to keep uric acid levels low.

Focus on a high-fiber, low fat diet with a balance of foods from all four food groups to help loose excess weight if desired.

Gout Supplements (Vitamin E)

Supplements also work as gout home remedies by dealing with current attacks and preventing future gout attacks from occurring. Vitamin E deficiencies may contribute to gout and eating fried foods may further deplete these levels. A daily dose of 400 IU daily should be sufficient.

Vitamin C and Gout

Vitamin C is probably one the most well known supplements for gout but the scientific data is largely undecided. Doses of 1,000 mg are often recommended at the onset of an attack.

However both vitamin C and niacin may increase uric acid levels in the body which is something counterintuitive to what you're attempting to achieve. High doses of vitamin C may also affect the absorption rates of some medications you may be taking.

Those with kidney disease should also ask their doctor before adding vitamin C to their gout regimen.

Turmeric and Gout

Turmeric a spice used in cooking, targets inflammatory pathways in the body, preventing pain and swelling associated with gout. A standard dose of 2 or 3 capsules a day are usually taken as natural remedies for gout.

Gout and Fish Oil

Ironically, fish oil is often recommended as a treatment for gout. Though fish meat is high in purines, pharmaceutically grade highly purified fish oil is safe for those with gouty arthritis.

Doses of 1,000 mg a day or greater are recommended for gout home remedies. Consult your doctor for specific dosage advice.
