Estrogen and Hair Loss
Low estrogen and hair loss is a characteristic that is hereditary and usually presents itself when women get older. Low and high estrogen plays a vital part in both effecting and preventing hair loss in women. Estrogen is a hormone that regulates the growth, development, and function of the reproductive system in women. It helps promote many characteristics of women, such as breast enlargement, hair growth, and producing healthy skin, hair, and nails. Both the ovaries and adrenal glands are responsible for producing estrogen. Estrogen is also found in men, but in much lesser amounts. Estrogen Deficiency Symptoms- Backaches- Mental fatigue - Lack of concentration - Anxiety - Depression - Irritability - Mood swings - Headaches - Vaginal dryness - Loss of sex drive - Excessive growth of facial hair - Difficulty sleeping - Dry itchy skin - Hot and cold flashes How does Low Estrogen cause Hair Loss?Estrogen deficiency generally occurs after giving birth or with age; during peri-menopause or menopause. Without a sufficient supply of estrogen, hair loss follicles reduce in number and thickness.During peri-menopause, hair loss is usually the first sign menopause is just around the corner. As menopause occurs, changes in the production of other hormones also occur. As a result, women will start to have more male hormones (testosterone) and fewer female hormones (estrogen and progesterone). Female Alopecia Hair LossHair loss in women is also known as female alopecia.Some female patterns of hair loss are;
- Generalized hair thinning over entire head. (estrogen deficiency). The causes of female alopecia are more difficult to diagnose due to the variable reasons on why it occurs. It is best to seek advice from a hair restoration specialist or a doctor who specializes in estrogen replacement therapy. Estrogen Replacement Therapy and Hair LossAlong with many solutions for reducing hair loss with men, there are solutions for women as well. Considering estrogen is the main ingredient in promoting a healthy head of hair, women may be prescribed estrogen replacement therapy (ERT). Exogenous estrogen will fill in the gap of your missing hormones.Pregnancy promotes Hair GrowthThe effects of extra estrogen are usually noted during pregnancy. This period usually gives women healthy, thick, luxurious hair compared to other times in their life.Supplements for Estrogen and Hair LossThere are a number of estrogen related products in the supplement market. None are really powerful enough to affect your natural hormonal balance. Soy products and other herbal remedies (Black Cohosh) are either not strong enough or have their own host of side effects which may not be desirable.Dealing with baldness can be a difficult time, but you are never alone. The loss of estrogen and hair loss may be remedied giving back your healthy head of hair.
Don't despair... have your doctor check your hormone levels if you think an estrogen deficiency may be the culprit.
