Cures for Gout

There are cures for gout that may relieve the intense joint pain commonly associated with the disease.

Sometimes called gouty arthritis this condition is one of the most painful forms of arthritis.

For this reason gout cures are often sought by sufferers.

Understanding the condition may help you live a pain free, normal life.

What Causes Gout?

Gout is caused by a buildup of uric acid in the body. Uric acid is a waste byproduct caused by the breakdown of purines which are found naturally in meats and some vegetables.

Normally this waste is passed into the kidneys and leaves the body in the urine. However, if you're exposed to high amounts of uric acid or becomes incapable of clearing it properly, it may form in to crystals in your body. These crystals settle in and around your joints.

For some, these crystals may appear as lumps under the skin. Uric acid crystals can also cause the development of kidney stones.

Some individuals are more susceptible to gout for genetic reasons. Conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and heart related conditions may also increase your risk of developing gout.

Medications such as diuretics or having an organ transplant are also risk factors. This should be discussed with your doctor when he recommends cures for gout.

Symptoms of Gout

Obvious symptoms of gout include stiffness, red and swollen joints and intense pain. For most people the first attack occurs in the big toe.

However, the hand, foot, knee, ankle, wrist or any joint in the body may also be affected. The first attack may last up to a week or longer before going away.

Overtime these attacks may occur more frequently, involve more joints, and last for longer periods of time.

Treatment for Gout

Once diagnosed, cures for gout revolve around prevention and treatment for current pain. During a flare-up, elevate the affected joint above the heart.

Icepacks may also be used for gout cures as they help reduce swelling and pain. Warm baths may also be soothing and aid in managing pain.

Keeping weight off the affected area may help the pain from getting worse. For example, if the gout is in the feet or legs, a cane will reduce the pressure on these areas.

Prevention of Gout

Drink plenty of fluids and cut down on alcohol that is rich in purines.

If overweight, losing fat may be a key to relief. However, rapid weight loss may also cause problems due to a sudden dumping of uric acid in to the bloodstream.

Consume a diet low in cholesterol and fat. Also use non-fattening dairy products, which are low in purines.

Cutting back on the consumption of purine rich foods including red meats, organ meats, legumes, anchovies and other forms of oily fishes are important to cure gout.

Your doctor may also recommend exercises to help strengthen the areas around your joints. Though a better diet will not usually completely eliminate the condition it may help keep it under control and allow you to live a normal life.
