Baldness Saw Palmetto

If you're experiencing baldness saw palmetto may help correct the underlying condition.

It may restore hair growth after only a couple months of consistant use.

The most common "male pattern baldness," aka androgenic alopecia occurs due to a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), negatively affecting hair follicles.

Beginning around the mid-20's for most men, hair shafts become weaker and shorter, until hair growth may cease altogether.

Baldness Saw Palmetto and DHT (dihydrotestosterone)

Although the effect is not entirely known, DHT is a byproduct of the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase's reaction with the male hormone testosterone. Saw palmetto may help reverse male pattern baldness since blocking DHT production will create a positive environment for hair to grow.

Androgenic alopecia is hereditary, which means if your father and grandfather experienced hair loss, you are much more likely to experience hair loss as well. Baldness is much more common in men although it does occur in women albeit with much less frequency.

When the DHT metabolite is reduced, in many cases normal hair growth may resume. (Incidentally, saw palmetto is also used to help correct another common problem in men, namely benign prostate hypertrophy).

Saw Palmetto Considerations

Although saw palmetto is safe and effective, it may not work for everyone with male pattern baldness. It's most effective on hair follicles that have only recently become dormant. It may not work on balding areas that have not had hair growth for a longer period of time.

Additionally, saw palmetto's effects only last as long as you take it. Any hair re-growth you may have experienced will slowly reverse, resulting in your previous balding patterns.

Saw Palmetto Side Effects

In some people saw palmetto may cause side effects. Digestive difficulties like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, constipation and mild stomach pain occur in a minority of people. Many men have also experienced sexual side effects like erectile dysfunction, breast tenderness, and changes in sex drive/libido.

However, for the most part, saw palmetto is safe and effective when taken in accordance with the manufacturer's directions. Saw palmetto can be very effective at correcting male baldness.

Check with your doctor or pharmacist to make sure your medications are not adversely effected by saw palmetto.

If you experience hair loss, saw palmetto may significantly correct the condition so you may re-grow a good portion of your hair, perhaps a significant amount. Due to it's milder nature saw palmetto is a safer alternative to medication for hair loss.
