My husband has no libido. His Dr. says it's because of low testosterone. His is 225 and normal is supposed to be 400+. What is the typical (although I understand there is NO typical) what is the mean average level for a 77 year old man?
PLEASE ANSWER SOON. Thank you.
Hi DD,
According to the charts listed on my normal testosterone levels page, the average levels for a man between the ages 75 and 84 should be around 471 ng/dl.
Now, getting his levels to the age group average won't necessarily make him frisky, but most likely make him feel like an average 77 year old, which in yours and his case, may not be ideal.
As more research is published, many doctors are aiming for optimal male hormones around the average 25-30 year old range.
This generally has a greater effect on maintaining bone mass, reducing heart disease risk, improving cholesterol profiles, alongside maintaining a greater quality of life with respect to; energy, mood, and sexual potency (libido and impotence).
Unfortunately finding doctors that will commit to getting towards the top of the healthy male range is often times difficult.
Your best bet may be to find a Life Extension Clinic or an Osteopath doctor in your area.
These doctors are generally more concerned about patient's low T symptoms and quality of life rather than blindly chasing numbers towards the bottom of a range.
Endocrinologists and Urologists often times choose the latter method but there are exceptions.
I did some searching and found some local doctors in your area at locateadoc.com and ratemds.com.
Most of these doctors specialize on hormone replacement therapy in the South Carolina area.
You may have to do a little digging around on the second link as the search function isn't as flexible. I could only find urologists in SC but they are the top rated.
Good luck!
